Subterranean Records

They put a sticker on the cd here that says "like the Pixies... but not". That works. They're really friendly here and have an amazing selection with tons of rare stuff, if you don't mind digging a bit
Academy Records & CDs 12 West 18th St. - Manhattan - (212) 242-3000

Bryan buys an average of 5 cd's a week here, and so should you. Not a huge selection, but they have everything the discerning indie rock/art-rock/post-punk/hipster consumer could ever want in a record store, plus vintage clothing upstairs
Don's Music
192 Amity St.- Brooklyn - (718) 246-0458
F train to Bergen St
Seriously one of the coolest record stores in the city - operating without the comforts of a large space, the collection of CDs and records for sale is hand-picked and eclectic, with lots of obscure gems and very little fat. Great vinyl, low prices, and they sell musical equipment, too - Jared even bought his bass cab there Don's recently closed and will be missed!
Music Matters 413-B 7th Ave - Park Slope, Brooklyn - (718) 369-7087
F train to 7th Ave or 15th st
Small store, big selection, and they'll order anything you want, plus it's the local shop for 4/5 of MiG

Rumble Seat Music
327 5th Ave. - Park Slope, Brooklyn - (718) 369-7646
F/R/W/M to 9th st
The best place for musical instruments in Brooklyn. We buy pretty much everything guitar related that we need here, and we even have an old organ living in their basement because we couldn't find a home for it. Their selection of used guitars and basses is incredible, and they've got some of the coolest people around working there (try them for repairs, Sarah could build an amp out of chicken wire and a fork, that's how good she is). They agreed to sell some of our cd's (they don't normally sell music, just instruments) so we love them even more. umble Seat recently closed but you can visit Stasha and Sarah's new guitar shop in the neighborhood at Mazzotti Music
New Jersey
Vintage Vinyl
51 Lafayette Rd - Fords, NJ - (732) 225-7717
it's in the 'rock' section here, one of the biggest, coolest, and definitely most well-known record shops in jersey (you can order the cd from them online too, the listed price includes s+h)
Princeton Record Exchange
20 South Tulane St - Princeton, NJ - (609) 921-0881
a great place for audiophiles tucked away in jersey's prime college town
Curmudgeon Records
237 Plainfield Ave - Edison, NJ - (732) 810-7668
a fairly smallish in size but large in reputation record store catering to punk and indie rock. they're really friendly here.
Now and Then Records
Hazlet Plaza on Rt. 35 - Hazlet, NJ - (732) 264-5329
This is Bryan's hometown neighborhood shop, so it's exciting to be selling the record there. At the moment we know that it's up front by the register and on the first rack under new releases when you go in the store.
